Benton Clean & Strong Adds Voice to Growing Calls for Governor Kotek
to Veto HB 4177
Coalition invites organizations across the spectrum to support transparency and public confidence in government
BENTON COUNTY, Oregon— Benton Clean & Strong, a coalition of residents, workers, businesses, and community advocates, today joined a growing number of voices urging Governor Tina Kotek to veto House Bill 4177. The coalition said its request reflects its longstanding advocacy for transparent decision-making, public accountability, and strong community trust in government processes.
House Bill 4177 would make changes to how certain public decision-making discussions are conducted and what information must be disclosed to the public, prompting concerns among community members, policy observers, and media outlets about potential impacts on transparency and public access to information.
Since its inception, Benton Clean & Strong has worked to encourage balanced, fact-based dialogue with and among elected leaders on complex local issues while promoting policies that support responsible economic development and environmental stewardship. The Coalition prioritizes maintaining open and accessible public processes is essential to achieving those goals.
“Good governance depends on transparency,” said Rebecca Tweed, speaking on behalf of Benton Clean & Strong. “People want to understand how decisions are reached and to feel confident their voices are part of the process. Taking additional time to review this legislation would help ensure that trust remains strong.”
As part of its call for a veto, the coalition is inviting community organizations that have taken differing positions on recent local issues — including Valley Neighbors for Environmental Quality and Beyond Toxics — to join in supporting stronger transparency protections and reinforcing public confidence in government decision-making.
“This is an opportunity for our community to come together around shared values,” Tweed said. “Even when we disagree on specific policies or projects, transparency and accountability should remain common ground. Strong public processes lead to better outcomes and more durable decisions.”
Benton Clean & Strong encouraged residents across Benton County to remain engaged and share their perspectives with local and state leaders as the Governor considers the bill. The coalition said it will continue working with community partners to promote informed dialogue and constructive civic participation.
